Sixty five AFP ranking officers get CA nod; DAR chief disapproved

The Commission on Appointments (CA), yesterday, in its plenary session, presided by President of the Senate/Chairman of the Commission Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, approved the confirmation of the ad interim appointments of 65 Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ranking officers from the Department of National Defense (DND). Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Rafael V. Mariano, however, faced serious oppositions at the committee level and failed to get the approval of the Commission after the Committee on Agrarian Reform, chaired by CA Asst. Majority Floor Leader Sen. Vicente C. Sotto III, voted against the confirmation of his ad interim appointment in an executive session/caucus.
Mariano or “Ka Paeng,” 60, a peasant leader and a former Anakpawis party-list group Representative (2004-2013), is himself a farmer who took up Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Agri -Cooperatives at the Liwag Colleges and Wesleyan University in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. Born and raised in Quezon, Nueva Ecija, he experienced activism first-hand at the age of 20 by joining the local youth activist organization Bisig ng Kabataan (Youth Arm) that championed the farmers’ advocacy, and in 1981, was elected as Barangay Councilman in their barrio.
